Greening the Urban Landscape: Alliance Clubs Dist. 101’s World Environment Day Initiative

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Alliance Clubs International District 101 took a decisive step toward environmental stewardship with a dedicated tree plantation initiative in the urban forest concept. As part of Alliance Clubs International, a vibrant NGO established on 5th September 2008 in Kolkata, committed to social welfare, leadership, and fellowship, this initiative reflects the organization’s enduring commitment to sustainable community development.

The tree plantation activity was more than just symbolic. It was a strategic move to combat urban ecological degradation, improve air quality, and enhance the green cover in densely populated areas. By adopting the urban forest model, District 101 ensured that the trees planted would thrive in harmony with city ecosystems, providing a long-term solution to urban heat, pollution, and biodiversity loss.

With the purpose of promoting environmental sustainability and community well-being, members of the club actively participated in planting a diverse mix of native trees. Their hands-on involvement fostered a deeper connection to nature and set an inspiring example for civic responsibility.

Through this green initiative, Alliance Clubs International Dist. 101 not only celebrated World Environment Day but also reinforced its role as a proactive catalyst for change, planting trees today for a healthier, greener tomorrow.

Project Planning & Execution

No of Trees: 200

Plantation Location: Institute of Environmental Studies and Wetland Management, Bamanghata, DD Block, Sector 1, Hatgachha, Kolkata, Hadia, West Bengal 700064

Plantation Date: 5th June 2025

Name of Species: Bakul, Delonix regia (Gulmohar), Peltophorum, Lagerstroemia (Pride of India), Tabebuia, Kanak Champa, Swarn Champa, Spathodea (African Tulip Tree), Mahogany, Neem, Cassia, Bargad (Banyan), Peepal, Mango, Guava, Jamun, Chiku, and Sagwan (Teak)

Species Selection & Its Benefits:

Alliance Club International’s plantation initiative involved the careful selection of tree species tailored to the local climate, soil conditions, and ecological requirements. A total of 200 trees were planted, comprising a diverse mix of 18 species: Bakul, Delonix regia (Gulmohar), Peltophorum, Lagerstroemia (Pride of India), Tabebuia, Kanak Champa, Swarn Champa, Spathodea (African Tulip Tree), Mahogany, Neem, Cassia, Bargad (Banyan), Peepal, Mango, Guava, Jamun, Chiku, and Sagwan (Teak).

These species were selected for their combined environmental, aesthetic, cultural, and nutritional value. Peepal, Bargad, and Neem are native species known for improving air quality, supporting biodiversity, and offering deep spiritual and cultural significance. Mahogany and Sagwan are valuable hardwood trees that contribute to long-term carbon sequestration and land stabilisation.

Fruit-bearing species such as Mango, Guava, Jamun, and Chiku help enhance local food security, attract pollinators, and sustain wildlife. Bakul is valued for its fragrant flowers and traditional medicinal uses.

Ornamental flowering trees such as Delonix regia, Peltophorum, Lagerstroemia, Tabebuia, Spathodea, Kanak Champa, and Swarn Champa add vibrant colours to the landscape while creating favourable microclimatic conditions through shade and transpiration. These species also attract bees, butterflies, and birds, enhancing local biodiversity.

Cassia, with its bright yellow blossoms, is both aesthetically pleasing and ecologically useful in enriching soil fertility and supporting insect life.

By integrating a thoughtful mix of native, flowering, medicinal, and fruit-bearing trees, Alliance Club International’s initiative strengthens the region’s green cover, promotes ecological balance, and advances its commitment to sustainable development and environmental restoration.

Planting Methodology and Its Advantages

Urban Forestry: An urban forest is a network of trees, shrubs, and vegetation strategically planted in urban areas to enhance biodiversity, improve air quality, reduce the urban heat island effect, and provide green spaces for community well-being. It helps mitigate climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, promotes mental health through accessible green areas, and supports local wildlife by creating habitats. Urban forests play a vital role in building resilient, sustainable cities that benefit both the environment and the people who live in them.

Advantages of Urban Forestry

  • Climate Regulation and Cooling Effect: Urban forests help mitigate the urban heat island effect by providing shade and cooling through transpiration, lowering city temperatures, reducing the need for air conditioning, and conserving energy.

  • Improved Air Quality: Trees absorb pollutants like carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, leading to improved air quality and reducing the risk of respiratory illnesses in urban areas.

  • Stormwater Management and Flood Prevention: Urban forests improve the soil’s ability to absorb and retain water, reducing stormwater runoff, preventing flooding, and promoting groundwater recharge, thus helping manage water resources efficiently.

  • Soil Erosion Control: The deep root systems of trees prevent soil erosion, especially in areas with heavy rainfall or steep slopes, stabilizing the land and reducing soil loss in urban environments.

  • Aesthetic and Recreational Value: The transformation of unused spaces into green zones adds aesthetic value to the area and provides members and local communities with recreational spaces, making the workplace more enjoyable.

  • Enhanced Community Engagement and Well-being: Urban forests provide accessible green spaces where communities can engage in recreational activities, improving mental health, reducing stress, and fostering a sense of environmental stewardship among residents and members.

  • Increased Property Value: Properties located near urban forests or green spaces tend to have higher market values, benefiting local property owners and increasing the overall appeal and livability of the area.

  • Noise Reduction: Urban forests act as natural sound barriers, reducing noise pollution and creating quieter, more peaceful surroundings.

Activities During Tree Plantation

The tree plantation drive by Alliance Clubs International at the Institute of Environmental Studies and Wetland Management was organised to celebrate World Environment Day and witnessed enthusiastic participation,  reinforcing the spirit of sustainability, unity, and community action.

The event was thoughtfully structured to offer a meaningful and immersive experience for all involved. The plantation site was pre-prepared with dug pits to ensure smooth sapling placement and efficient execution. Members of Alliance Clubs actively engaged in planting a diverse range of native tree species, directly contributing to the creation of a vibrant and ecologically balanced green space.

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, participants carried placards bearing powerful environmental slogans, raising awareness and inspiring onlookers about the importance of trees, biodiversity, and climate action. The event also included the singing of songs dedicated to Mother Earth and the beauty of nature, which created a deeply emotional and cultural resonance, reminding everyone of our sacred bond with the planet.

Throughout the activity, participants received guidance on planting techniques to ensure sapling survival and long-term growth. The hands-on experience not only strengthened environmental awareness but also promoted teamwork and a deeper personal connection to sustainability.

The day concluded with a reflective session where participants shared their experiences, insights, and renewed commitment to protecting the environment. This initiative stood as a heartfelt testament to Alliance Clubs International’s dedication to Earth care, community engagement, and building a greener, healthier planet for generations to come.
