Quick answer
One credit is one tonne of CO₂ removed and verified. A mature tree takes up roughly 21.8 kg of CO₂ a year (Arbor Day Foundation), young trees much less. So credits depend on the number of surviving trees, how fast they grow, the crediting period and the share held back in the standard's buffer pool. Credits are issued only after independent verification.
At about 21.8 kg of CO₂ a year once mature, a tree removes roughly one tonne in 45 years of mature growth. Credits come from many trees together, after verification.
Usually several years: trees must grow and be verified before the first credits are issued.
A share of credits a standard holds back from every project to cover the risk of carbon being lost, for example to fire. The share depends on each project's risk rating.
It varies by project type and quality. In 2024 the voluntary market average was US$6.34, agroforestry about US$14 and blue carbon about US$29 per tonne (Ecosystem Marketplace).
No. In our programmes farmers earn from the fruit and timber their trees produce.
