Quick answer

Which industries in India have plantation and restoration duties?

Most large industrial projects carry a green belt condition in their environmental clearance, mines must reclaim land under their closure plans, and projects that use forest land fund compensatory afforestation. Cement, aluminium, chlor-alkali, pulp and paper, refining, petrochemical and textile units also have emission-intensity targets under India's carbon market (CCTS), which planting trees does not reduce. Grow Billion Trees helps companies meet the planting duties and their CSR and voluntary net-zero goals.

Plantation and restoration duties by industry

The table lists the main rules each industry works under. Each industry page explains what they ask, whether plantation helps, and the sources.

Industry Main rules and drivers
Cement Environmental clearance: green belt; CCTS emission intensity targets (GEI Target Rules, 2025); Mine closure under MCDR 2017; BRSR (SEBI)
Coal and mining Mine closure plan (Ministry of Coal guidelines, 2009; revised 2013 and 2020); Environmental clearance plantation conditions; Safety zone on forest-land leases (MoEFCC, 2014); Coal PSU greening target
Oil and gas CCTS emission intensity targets (refining, petrochemicals); Green belt in environmental clearance; CRZ Notification, 2019 (mangroves); Compensatory afforestation for pipelines
Iron and steel Environmental clearance: green belt; CCTS emission intensity targets (draft); Mine closure under MCDR 2017; EC water and slag conditions
Power Green belt in environmental clearance (thermal); Fly ash notification, 31 Dec 2021; Transmission lines through forest (2014 guidelines); Compensatory afforestation (Van Rules, 2023)
Metal mining Mine closure plans (MCDR 2017, Rules 22 to 26); Financial assurance (MCDR Rule 27); Topsoil and dumps (MCDR Rules 36 and 37); Safety zone on forest-land leases (MoEFCC, 2014)
Infrastructure Green Highways (Plantation, Transplantation, Beautification & Maintenance) Policy, 2015; NHAI plantation monitoring (Harit Path); City and state tree laws (example: Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994); Delhi Tree Transplantation Policy (2020)
Chemicals, paper and textiles CCTS: GHG Emission Intensity Target Rules (chlor-alkali, pulp & paper, 8 Oct 2025); CCTS targets for textiles (January 2026); MoEFCC OM on green belt criteria (29 Oct 2025); Same OM: critically and severely polluted areas
Real estate City and state tree laws (example: Delhi Preservation of Trees Act, 1994); Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975 (amended 2021); S.O. 3999(E), 9 Dec 2016; Draft Building Construction Environment Management Regulations, 2022

What plantation can and cannot count for

Plantation meets green belt, reclamation and compensatory afforestation duties, supports CSR and BRSR reporting, and can support voluntary net-zero claims alongside cutting emissions. It does not reduce a plant's emission intensity under India's carbon market. Read green credits vs carbon credits vs CSR vs BRSR and our green belt guide.

Questions industrial companies ask

Does planting trees help a plant meet its CCTS target?

No. CCTS targets cover a plant's own emission intensity, and trees do not reduce it. Plantation helps with green belt, reclamation, compensatory afforestation, CSR and voluntary net-zero goals. See what plantation can count for.

How much of our site must be green belt?

It depends on your environmental clearance. Older clearances often say 33%; a 29 October 2025 ministry memo set category-based minimums for new ones. Work it out with the green belt calculator, or read our green belt guide.

Can you plant on degraded or mined-out land?

Yes. We plan species and soil work for dumps, quarries and degraded land, plant with our team and care for the trees for three years.

Can plantation for a legal condition also count as CSR?

Usually not. Work a company must do by law, such as a clearance condition, generally does not count as CSR spending. Community plantation beyond your duties can. Check with your CSR committee.

How do you report on the trees?

Every tree is geo-tagged and tracked on GreenTrack, with survival checks, photos and reports your compliance, CSR and BRSR teams can use. Survival across our programmes is 85%.

What does a programme cost?

Green belt, reclamation and Miyawaki work is priced per project after a site survey. Tell us about your site for a quote.
