Banking, finance and insurance

CSR forests your board, staff and customers can see

We plan, plant and care for trees for banks, NBFCs, insurers and asset managers, and report every tree on GreenTrack. Plantation supports CSR and BRSR; it does not change financed emissions.

Quick answer

What does a banking or financial services company need from tree plantation?

Most banks, NBFCs and insurers above the s.135 thresholds must spend 2% of average net profit on CSR, and Schedule VII includes environmental sustainability and agroforestry. The top 1,000 listed companies by market capitalisation must file a BRSR, so CSR plantation needs auditable, geo-tagged data. RBI climate-risk rules look at the loan book, and planting trees does not reduce financed emissions.

Banking, finance and insurance: what drives plantation

For banks, NBFCs, insurers and asset managers, plantation is driven by CSR, BRSR and staff and customer programmes, not by a site rule. The cards below show what each driver asks. RBI rules on climate risk are about the loan book, and trees do not change them.

Driver What it asks How plantation helps Source
CSR spending (Companies Act 2013, s.135) Companies with net worth of ₹500 crore, turnover of ₹1,000 crore or net profit of ₹5 crore spend 2% of average net profit on CSR. Yes: Schedule VII lists environmental sustainability, ecological balance and agroforestry, so a plantation programme can be a CSR project. LiveLaw: CSR Amendment Rules, 2021
Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (SEBI, 2021) BRSR is mandatory for the top 1,000 listed companies by market capitalisation from FY 2022-23. Partly: plantation gives geo-tagged, auditable data for environment and community disclosures. It does not lower reported emissions. SEBI circular on BRSR, 10 May 2021
Climate-risk disclosure for regulated entities (RBI, draft 2024) A February 2024 draft asks banks, large NBFCs and financial institutions to disclose climate-related financial risks. It was issued as a draft for comment. No: climate-risk disclosure is about the loan book and its exposure. Trees do not change financed emissions or portfolio risk. RBI press release: draft climate-risk disclosure framework, 28 Feb 2024
Green deposits framework (RBI, 2023) Banks and deposit-taking NBFCs must allocate green deposit money to eligible green activities, with board policy and third-party verification. Partly: "afforestation/reforestation" is an eligible activity, but this is about lending deposit money, not CSR or offsetting. RBI: Framework for acceptance of Green Deposits, 11 Apr 2023
Impact assessment of CSR projects (CSR Rules, 2021) Companies with a CSR obligation of ₹10 crore or more get an independent impact assessment of projects of ₹1 crore or more. Yes: geo-tags, survival counts and farmer records give the assessor field evidence to check. LiveLaw: CSR Amendment Rules, 2021

Use the branch network for employee drives

A bank with branches in many districts can run one programme with local planting days. Staff plant near their own city, and every tree is geo-tagged into one report. See employee plantation drives for formats.

One tree per account, policy or SIP

Customer campaigns work well for new accounts, policy renewals or digital sign-ups. Each customer gets a certificate with a tree location they can open. Each tree is a 2-3 ft sapling, planted, cared for three years and geo-tagged. See one tree per sale and tree gifting.

Keep CSR, green finance and offsets separate

CSR plantation is a social and environmental project. Green deposits are lending decisions. Neither reduces your own or your financed emissions. We report trees as trees, with carbon shown only as estimates. Read BRSR-ready reporting before you draft disclosures.

Questions banking, finance and insurance companies ask

Can a bank count tree plantation as CSR?

Yes. Schedule VII of the Companies Act includes environmental sustainability, ecological balance and agroforestry. The project must be run directly or through a registered implementing agency. See our Schedule VII checklist.

Does planting trees reduce our financed emissions?

No. Financed emissions come from the companies and projects you lend to or invest in. Trees we plant do not change that number, and we do not present them as an offset against it.

Does the RBI require banks to plant trees?

No. RBI rules deal with green deposits, green finance and climate risk in the loan book. Its climate-risk disclosure framework was issued as a draft in February 2024; check the RBI website for the current status.

Can green deposit money fund afforestation?

RBI's 2023 green deposit framework lists afforestation/reforestation as an eligible activity. That is a lending decision under your board policy, separate from CSR spending.

How can we run a tree-per-customer campaign?

You choose the trigger, such as a new account or policy renewal. Each tree is a 2-3 ft sapling, planted, cared for three years and geo-tagged, and the customer gets a certificate. See tree gifting.

Can employees in many cities take part?

Yes. We run planting days in several cities and combine the results in one GreenTrack report. Projects with farmers and communities are planned per site after a survey.

Do you sell carbon credits from these trees?

No. We do not sell carbon credits from these plantations. Any carbon figure we share is an estimate, and trees supplement, never replace, cutting your own emissions.
