Short answer: The best-known carbon credit companies working in India include project developers such as EKI Energy Services, South Pole, Varaha and Grow Indigo, and advisers such as Emergent Ventures India. Which one fits depends on what you need: buying credits, developing a project, or getting advice. Before you sign, check every credit against its registry (Verra, Gold Standard or India's own registry run by Grid-India).

How we chose these companies
- Their carbon work in India is described in public sources: company filings, registry records or established news coverage.
- Together they cover the main roles a buyer meets: developers, removal specialists, advisers and verifiers.
- We left out companies whose current carbon activity we couldn't confirm. Inclusion is not an endorsement. Do your own checks.
Types of carbon credit companies
- Project developers design and run projects (renewable energy, forestry, agriculture, waste) and receive the credits.
- Carbon removal developers specialise in projects that take CO₂ out of the air, such as biochar, tree planting and soil carbon.
- Advisers help companies measure emissions, set targets and choose credits.
- Validation and verification bodies independently check that projects follow their methodology.
- Exchanges and registries record and trade credits. In India, Carbon Credit Certificates are held in the Grid-India registry and traded on the power exchanges. See our carbon credit trading guide.
How to choose a carbon credit company
- Check the registry. Every credit should have a serial number you can look up on Verra, Gold Standard or the Indian registry.
- Ask about the methodology. Which approved method does the project use, and who verified it?
- Look at the vintage. The year the reduction or removal happened matters to many buyers and reporting frameworks.
- Prefer removals with proof. For tree and soil projects, ask for site-level data: maps, photos and survival or measurement records.
- Read the contract. Who carries the risk if credits are cancelled or a project under-delivers?
Where Grow Billion Trees fits
Grow Billion Trees is a tree plantation company, not a carbon credit trader. We run plantation programmes for companies across 14 states: Miyawaki forests, agroforestry with farmers and mangrove restoration. 85% of trees survive across our programmes, and every tree is tracked on our GreenTrack platform.
Most companies work with us through CSR. For companies exploring carbon, India's offset mechanism now includes approved forestry methods for mangroves and for afforestation of other lands, and we can advise whether a site could suit one. See carbon credits or talk to our team.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the biggest carbon credit company in India?
EKI Energy Services is one of the best-known Indian carbon credit developers and is listed on the BSE. International firms such as South Pole also run large Indian portfolios. "Biggest" depends on whether you count projects, credits issued or revenue.
How do I check whether a carbon credit is genuine?
Look up its serial number on the issuing registry: Verra, Gold Standard or India's Grid-India registry for Carbon Credit Certificates. A genuine credit shows the project, the vintage and whether it has been retired.
Can tree plantation companies sell carbon credits?
Only if their projects are registered under an approved methodology and verified. Planting trees alone does not create credits; measured, verified carbon removal does.
Do I need a carbon credit company to offset my emissions?
Not always. Many companies first reduce their own emissions and fund verified projects through CSR. When they do buy credits, a developer or adviser helps them find credible ones.
