Calculate your wedding footprint

Use your guest list and rough travel plans; add rooms and power if you know them.

An estimate for awareness, not an audited figure.

Quick answer

How do you calculate the carbon footprint of a wedding?

Add up guest travel (guests × distance × a factor for each mode), hotel stays (room-nights × 58.9 kg CO₂e for India), venue electricity and generator diesel. Guest travel is usually the largest part, especially when guests fly.

What the wedding calculator counts

  • Guest travel: return journeys by car, coach, train and flight, using the shares you enter.
  • Hotel stays: 58.9 kg CO₂e per room-night for India (UK DESNZ 2025).
  • Venue power: grid electricity at 0.710 kg CO₂ per kWh (CEA) and generator diesel at 2.68 kg CO₂ per litre (IPCC).

Food, decor, clothes and gifts are not included because their footprints vary too widely to estimate from a few numbers.

Ways to lower it

  • Choose a venue close to most guests, and arrange coaches from the station or airport.
  • Encourage trains for guests travelling within India.
  • Use grid power or solar instead of diesel generators where the venue allows.
  • Keep functions in one place to cut travel between venues.

Turn it into something that grows

Plant a wedding forest with a tree for each guest, or gift trees as return gifts. Each tree is a 2-3 ft sapling, cared for three years, geo-tagged and comes with a certificate.

Common questions

What is the biggest part of a wedding's footprint?

Usually guest travel, especially flights. A destination wedding with many flying guests can be several times larger than a local one.

How is the hotel stay counted?

At 58.9 kg CO₂e per room-night, the UK government's 2025 average for hotel stays in India. Enter rooms × nights.

Why is food not included?

Menus and sourcing vary too much to estimate reliably from a few inputs, so the calculator focuses on travel, stays and power.

How many trees should we plant?

The calculator shows the trees whose yearly uptake, once mature, matches your total, allowing for 85% survival across our programmes. Many couples plant one tree per guest.

Can guests receive the trees as gifts?

Yes. Gifted trees come with a certificate, and guests can see them on a digital forest page.
