Carbon footprint calculator: your home and travel in India

Enter your electricity units, cooking gas, daily travel and flights to see your yearly footprint in tonnes of CO₂e, and the trees that would balance it.

Free to use · nothing is stored · sources for every factor

Calculate your footprint

Use numbers from your electricity bill and a typical week. Leave anything you do not know blank.

An estimate for awareness, not an audited figure.

Quick answer

How do I calculate my carbon footprint in India?

Multiply each activity by its emission factor and add them up: electricity units by the grid factor (0.710 kg CO₂ per kWh in India), cooking gas by its fuel factor, and travel by a factor per kilometre. This calculator does that for your home energy, daily travel and flights, and shows your yearly total in tonnes of CO₂e.

What this calculator counts

It covers the parts of a personal footprint you can read from bills and habits: electricity at home, cooking gas, how you get around, and flights. Home energy is divided by the number of people in your home, so the result is your share.

Activity Factor used Source
Grid electricity 0.710 kg CO₂ per kWh CEA CO₂ Baseline Database v21 (FY 2024-25)
LPG 2.98 kg CO₂ per kg (about 42 kg per 14.2 kg cylinder) IPCC 2006 Guidelines
Piped natural gas 2.09 kg CO₂ per scm IPCC 2006 Guidelines
Car 0.164 kg CO₂e per km UK DESNZ 2025 (approximation)
Two-wheeler 0.083 kg CO₂e per km (small motorbike) UK DESNZ 2025 (approximation)
Bus / metro 0.104 / 0.029 kg CO₂e per passenger-km UK DESNZ 2025 (approximation)
Flights Per passenger-km, including radiative forcing UK DESNZ 2025

How to lower it

  • Electricity: efficient fans, lights and ACs, and rooftop solar where you can, cut the biggest home item for most families.
  • Travel: metro, bus and shared rides emit far less per person than driving alone; try the commute calculator to compare.
  • Flights: one long trip can outweigh months of daily travel; see the flight calculator.

Balancing what is left

Trees take up CO₂ as they grow, slowly at first. Use them for what remains after cutting what you can. Each tree we plant for you is a 2-3 ft sapling, cared for three years and geo-tagged, from ₹299.

A screening estimate for awareness, not an audited inventory. Companies should use the business carbon footprint calculator.

Common questions

What is a good carbon footprint for one person?

It depends on where and how you live. The useful step is to see which part of your own footprint is largest and cut that first.

Why is food not included?

Food footprints vary widely by diet and supply chain, and we do not have a reliable India-specific factor to use. The calculator covers energy and travel, which you can read from bills.

Why do you use UK factors for transport?

India does not publish a full official set of per-kilometre travel factors. The UK government set is widely used as an approximation; you can edit the car factor under Assumptions.

How many trees balance my footprint?

The calculator divides your yearly CO₂ by about 21.8 kg per mature tree and allows for 85% survival across our programmes. Young trees take up much less.

Can I plant trees for my footprint?

Yes. Each tree is a 2-3 ft sapling planted for you, cared for three years and geo-tagged, from ₹299.
