The farmer's consent and active participation played a crucial role in selecting the tree species, ensuring seamless integration with existing agricultural practices.
For this initiative, a single farmer was supported with the plantation of 100 Mango (Mangifera indica), selected for its resilience and high market value, which delivers multifaceted benefits—it boosts long-term farmer profitability while nurturing environmental health. Ecologically, mango trees act as potent carbon sinks, storing CO₂ in their biomass and helping mitigate climate change; their deep, extensive root systems anchor soil, curb erosion, and enhance groundwater recharge, while canopies create a microclimate conducive to surrounding crops. Moreover, they serve as biodiversity hotspots, providing habitat for birds, insects, pollinators, and other wildlife. Economically, mango orchards are long-lasting (30–50 years) income generators, with strong export demand, value-addition opportunities, and support from government incentives and organic market premiums. Nutritionally, mangoes enrich diets with vitamins (notably C and A), antioxidants, and dietary fiber. Classic uses—such as wood (for instruments and furniture), bark dye, and traditional medicine—further underscore their versatility and cultural significance. Activities During Tree Plantation
Tattva Jewell ers’ agroforestry initiative was thoughtfully implemented in Girvi village, Phaltan taluka, Satara district, Maharashtra (PIN: 415523)—a region characterized by medium to deep black, lime-rich Deccan Trap soils known for their fertility under proper irrigation, yet prone to alkalisation during dry periods. Annual rainfall on the eastern side of Satara, where Girvi lies, is relatively low—often less than 500 mm.
Partnering with Dilip Chopade, a dedicated local farmer, the project leveraged his profound understanding of these local agro-climatic realities. The site was meticulously prepared with pre-dug pits and healthy mango (Mangifera indica) saplings, creating optimal conditions for root development and early growth. On the plantation day, Tattva Jwellers’ team worked alongside Dilip to plant and water 100 mango trees, demonstrating corporate responsibility and strong community collaboration.
These mango trees are projected to deliver long-term economic benefits to Dilip Chopade while concurrently enhancing ecological health through improved soil stability, enhanced biodiversity, moderated microclimate, effective carbon sequestration, and improved groundwater recharge—crucial in a region challenged by drought and water scarcity.
