About this forest

Novo Nordisk is a more than 100-year-old Danish multinational pharmaceutical company focused on developing and providing healthcare solutions, particularly in the areas of diabetes and obesity. With a global presence spanning around 80 countries and products marketed across approximately 170 countries, the company combines scientific innovation with a strong commitment to creating positive social and environmental impact.

Through GBS TakeAction, Novo Nordisk’s CSR initiative, the organisation is raising awareness around disaster risk reduction and the growing connection between environmental changes, nature, and community resilience. The initiative aligns with the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction on 13 October 2026 and encourages participants to reflect on the importance of protecting natural ecosystems.

The initiative aims to nurture the environment, strengthen biodiversity, and build more resilient communities through greater environmental awareness. By encouraging an environment-conscious mindset and collective action, Novo Nordisk seeks to inspire positive change and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come.

Planting Methodology and Its Advantages

Conventional Tree Plantation: Conventional tree plantation refers to the planned plantation of trees and vegetation in designated open areas to enhance biodiversity, improve air quality, support soil conservation, and create green spaces for community well-being. It helps mitigate climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, strengthens ecological balance, and supports local wildlife by creating natural habitats. Such plantations also contribute to improved microclimate conditions, reduce dust pollution, and promote long-term environmental sustainability. Conventional plantations play a vital role in restoring green cover and building healthier, more resilient ecosystems for both the environment and surrounding communities.

Advantages of Conventional Tree Plantation

  • Climate Regulation and Cooling Effect: Conventional forests help reduce local heat stress by providing shade and cooling through transpiration. This lowers surrounding temperatures, reduces the need for air conditioning, and supports energy conservation.

  • Improved Air Quality: Trees absorb pollutants such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, improving overall air quality and reducing the risk of respiratory illnesses in the surrounding areas.

  • Stormwater Management and Flood Prevention: Conventional forests enhance the soil’s ability to absorb and retain water, reducing stormwater runoff, preventing flooding, and promoting groundwater recharge, thereby supporting efficient water resource management.

  • Soil Erosion Control: The deep root systems of trees help prevent soil erosion, especially in areas with heavy rainfall, stabilising land and reducing soil loss in plantation landscapes.

  • Aesthetic and Recreational Value: Converting unused or underutilised spaces into green zones enhances the visual appeal of the area and local communities with recreational spaces, contributing to a more pleasant environment.

  • Enhanced Community Engagement and Well-being: Conventional forests offer accessible green spaces where communities can engage in recreational activities, improving mental well-being, reducing stress, and fostering a sense of environmental responsibility among residents

  • Increased Property Value: Properties located near plantations or green spaces often experience higher market value, benefiting local property owners and increasing the overall livability of the surrounding area.

  • Noise Reduction: Conventional forests act as natural sound barriers by absorbing and deflecting noise, reducing noise pollution, and creating calmer and more peaceful surroundings.

Conclusion Elements

Indirect Impact

Community Impact

  • Improved Public Health: By improving air quality and reducing urban heat, the project indirectly contributes to better public health. The presence of green spaces encourages outdoor activities, which can reduce stress levels, promote mental well-being, and decrease the incidence of respiratory diseases.

  • Environmental Awareness: Involving communities in Conventional tree plantation raises awareness about environmental conservation and promotes sustainable practices in daily life.

  • Inspiration for Change: By showcasing the potential of Conventional tree plantation, the project has encouraged other organizations and local communities to undertake similar initiatives.

  • Cultural Shift: The initiative instilled a mindset of sustainability and environmental care among participants, creating advocates for green practices in their personal and professional lives.

Environmental Impact

  • Carbon Sequestration: The trees planted through Novo Nordisk's Conventional tree plantation initiative absorb carbon dioxide, acting as carbon sinks and helping mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Soil Health Improvement: The tree planting initiative enhances soil health by enriching it with organic matter, improving soil fertility and structure, which supports the growth of surrounding vegetation.

  • Erosion Prevention: Tree roots help stabilize the soil in urban areas, preventing erosion caused by wind and water while safeguarding nearby properties and infrastructure from potential damage.

  • Biodiversity Conservation: By creating green spaces, the initiative supports local biodiversity, providing habitats for various species, pollinators, and beneficial insects, and enhancing the ecological balance in urban areas.

  • Water Cycle Regulation: The Conventional tree plantation project helps regulate the water cycle by improving water retention in the soil, recharging groundwater levels, and reducing surface runoff, leading to a more balanced and sustainable urban environment.

  • Microclimate Regulation: Trees planted through this initiative moderate temperature extremes, reduce wind speeds, and increase humidity, creating a favourable microclimate for both the community and the urban ecosystem.
