Species Selection & Its Benefits
The species selected for Fareportal's urban forestry initiative were carefully chosen to align with the local ecosystem and maximise ecological benefits. The focus was on planting a mix of native, shade-providing, and fruit-bearing species, including Neem, Jamun, Tamarind, Amla, Pungamia, and Arjun.
The selected native species were chosen for their ecological, medicinal, and socio-economic value. Neem is known for its strong pest-repellent properties and air-purifying qualities, making it ideal for improving environmental health. Jamun and Tamarind are fruit-bearing trees that support food security and attract pollinators, enhancing biodiversity. Amla is rich in Vitamin C and has high medicinal value, commonly used in traditional health remedies. Pungamia (Karanj) is a nitrogen-fixing tree that improves soil fertility and is also a potential source of biofuel. Arjun is valued for its role in preventing soil erosion, supporting riverbank stabilisation, and its medicinal bark is used in Ayurvedic treatments.
