Building Green Futures: ACCA Urban Forest Initiative at JNPA, Mumbai

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is a globally recognized professional accounting body that offers a prestigious qualification for careers in accounting, finance, and auditing across more than 180 countries. Known for its flexibility, ACCA enables students to take exams on demand or during four main sessions each year, allowing them to progress at a pace that suits their professional journey. The qualification is designed to build strong technical expertise, ethical values, and strategic thinking, preparing members to contribute meaningfully in a dynamic global economy.

Climate change remains one of the defining challenges of our time, and as champions of sustainability, ACCA embraces a shared responsibility to act thoughtfully, decisively, and for the long term. This commitment extends beyond the ACCA community to the wider world it serves. ACCA members are a true force for the public good, guided by integrity, professionalism, and the highest ethical standards in every community they work with.

In this spirit, ACCA is proud to collaborate with Grow Billion Trees to plant trees on behalf of new members inducted into ACCA membership in 2025. As members grow in their careers, these trees will grow alongside them—strengthening soil health, conserving water, and supporting sustainable livelihoods for farmers and local communities. This initiative stands as a living symbol of ACCA’s belief that professional progress and environmental stewardship must go hand in hand, creating fairer economies, healthier ecosystems, and a more hopeful future for generations to come.

Project Planning & Execution

No of Trees: 100

Plantation Location: JNPT Rd, Sheva Rd, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra

Plantation Date: 13th February 2026

Name of Species: Bakul, Neem, Ashoka, Karanj, Sunchopara & Badam.

Species Selection & Its Benefits:

The species selected for ACCA’s urban forestry initiative were carefully chosen to align with the local ecosystem and maximise ecological benefits. A diverse mix of Bakul, Neem, Ashoka, Karanj, Sunchopara & Badam was planted to strengthen green cover and support long-term environmental sustainability.

The selected species—Bakul, Neem, Ashoka, Karanj, Sunchopara, and Badam—have been chosen for their ecological resilience, social value, and suitability to Indian climatic conditions. Bakul (Mimusops elengi) is an evergreen tree that improves air quality, provides dense shade, and supports pollinators with its fragrant flowers. Neem (Azadirachta indica) is highly valued for its medicinal properties, natural pest-repellent qualities, and ability to thrive in dry, degraded soils while improving soil health. Ashoka (Saraca asoca) is culturally significant and supports biodiversity, especially birds and insects, while contributing to aesthetic greening. Karanj (Pongamia pinnata) is a nitrogen-fixing species that enriches soil fertility, controls erosion, and produces oil-rich seeds useful for biofuel. Sunchopara (commonly used as a fast-growing shade or boundary species) helps in quick canopy formation and microclimate regulation. Badam (Terminalia catappa/Indian almond) provides nutritious nuts, broad shade, and enhances landscape value. Together, these species promote biodiversity, carbon sequestration, soil improvement, and long-term ecological sustainability.

Beyond their environmental benefits, these species contribute to social and cultural well-being by improving urban aesthetics, reducing heat stress, and creating more livable public spaces. The thoughtful selection of these trees ensures the development of a resilient urban forest that delivers long-term ecological impact, community value, and climate resilience, reflecting ACCA’s commitment to sustainable urban development and responsible environmental stewardship.

Planting Methodology and Its Advantages

Urban Forestry: An urban forest is a network of trees, shrubs, and vegetation strategically planted in urban areas to enhance biodiversity, improve air quality, reduce the urban heat island effect, and provide green spaces for community well-being. It helps mitigate climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, promotes mental health through accessible green areas, and supports local wildlife by creating habitats. Urban forests play a vital role in building resilient, sustainable cities that benefit both the environment and the people who live in them.

Advantages of Urban Forestry

  • Climate Regulation and Cooling Effect: Urban forests help mitigate the urban heat island effect by providing shade and cooling through transpiration, lowering temperatures in cities, reducing the need for air conditioning, and conserving energy.

  • Improved Air Quality: Trees absorb pollutants like carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, leading to improved air quality and reducing the risk of respiratory illnesses in urban areas.

  • Stormwater Management and Flood Prevention: Urban forests improve the soil’s ability to absorb and retain water, reducing stormwater runoff, preventing flooding, and promoting groundwater recharge, thus helping manage water resources efficiently.

  • Soil Erosion Control: The deep root systems of trees prevent soil erosion, especially in areas with heavy rainfall or steep slopes, stabilizing the land and reducing soil loss in urban environments.

  • Aesthetic and Recreational Value: The transformation of unused spaces into green zones adds aesthetic value to the area and provides employees and local communities with recreational spaces, making the workplace more enjoyable.

  • Enhanced Community Engagement and Well-being: Urban forests provide accessible green spaces where communities can engage in recreational activities, improving mental health, reducing stress, and fostering a sense of environmental stewardship among residents and employees.

  • Increased Property Value: Properties located near urban forests or green spaces tend to have higher market values, benefiting local property owners and increasing the overall appeal and livability of the area.

  • Noise Reduction: Urban forests act as natural sound barriers, reducing noise pollution and creating quieter, more peaceful surroundings.
