Inside environment CSR
The portal reports environment spending under five headings. Tree plantation programmes usually fall under environmental sustainability, with agroforestry and conservation of natural resources reported separately.
| Heading | FY 2021-22 | FY 2022-23 | FY 2023-24 | FY 2024-25 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Environmental sustainability | ₹2,442 Cr | ₹2,027 Cr | ₹2,483 Cr | ₹3,397 Cr |
| Conservation of natural resources | ₹275 Cr | ₹585 Cr | ₹439 Cr | ₹426 Cr |
| Animal welfare | ₹174 Cr | ₹326 Cr | ₹549 Cr | ₹561 Cr |
| Agroforestry | ₹36 Cr | ₹67 Cr | ₹75 Cr | ₹88 Cr |
| Clean Ganga Fund | ₹55 Cr | ₹46 Cr | ₹67 Cr | ₹19 Cr |
| Total | ₹2,982 Cr | ₹3,052 Cr | ₹3,613 Cr | ₹4,491 Cr |
Agroforestry is still small, at ₹88 Cr in FY 2024-25, against ₹18 Cr in FY 2014-15. Programmes that plant fruit and timber trees with farmers may also be reported under environmental sustainability or rural development, so this heading may understate them.

Note: spending that companies report as "Pan India" fell from ₹8,138 Cr in FY 2023-24 to ₹1,606 Cr in FY 2024-25, while most states rose sharply. This suggests more spending is now reported against a named state, so part of the state-level growth is a change in reporting, not only new money.
The lowest totals are in Lakshadweep, Daman and Diu, Mizoram, Andaman and Nicobar, each under ₹16 Cr.

What this means for CSR plantation programmes
- Environment is a mainstream CSR choice. It is the third-largest sector and the fastest-growing of the top three, so boards and CSR committees increasingly expect environment programmes in the portfolio.
- Scrutiny follows money. As spending grows, so do questions about results. Plan for survival records, geo-tagged trees and yearly reports, not only planting numbers. See the CSR utilisation certificate and CSR rules for tree plantation.
- Agroforestry is under-funded. Programmes that plant with farmers combine environment and livelihood goals, but the agroforestry heading receives a small fraction of environment CSR.
- Location matters. CSR clusters in a few industrial states; many states with large restoration needs receive little. A company can meet local-area expectations and still fund programmes in other states.
