Mission LiFE and the Green India Mission: Where Company Plantations Fit

Mission LiFE, launched in October 2022, promotes environment-friendly everyday choices. The Green India Mission, one of the eight missions under India's climate action plan, focuses on forest and tree cover; its June 2025 roadmap prioritises the Aravallis, Western Ghats, Himalayas and mangroves. Company plantations fit best when they restore these landscapes with native species and track survival.
India has set national goals for forests and climate, and companies are increasingly asked how their sustainability work contributes. Two national programmes come up most often: Mission LiFE and the Green India Mission. This guide explains both and how a company's plantation programme can align with them.
Mission LiFE: lifestyles for the environment
- Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2022, with the UN Secretary-General.
- Aims to turn environmental protection into a mass movement of individual action, a "pro-planet people" approach.
- Promotes everyday choices across themes such as saving energy and water, reducing waste and single-use plastic, sustainable food systems and healthy lifestyles.
- Campaigns such as Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam are linked to it.
For companies, LiFE fits most naturally with employee engagement: office energy and water habits, waste reduction, and participation in tree planting that employees can see and follow.
The Green India Mission
- One of the eight national missions under India's National Action Plan on Climate Change.
- Aims to protect, restore and enhance India's forest and tree cover, and to respond to climate change.
- Its goals include increasing forest and tree cover on 5 million hectares and improving the quality of forest cover on another 5 million hectares.
- It supports India's commitment under the Paris Agreement to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent through forest and tree cover by 2030.
The revised roadmap (June 2025)
In June 2025 the government released a revised roadmap that focuses restoration on ecologically sensitive landscapes:
- the Aravalli range, linked to the Aravalli Green Wall project against desertification;
- the Western Ghats;
- the Himalayas;
- mangroves along the coasts.
How company plantations can align
| National priority | What a company programme can do |
|---|---|
| Restore degraded landscapes | Fund restoration in or near priority landscapes, with native species and long-term care |
| Coastal resilience | Support mangrove restoration with coastal communities |
| Trees outside forests | Plant with farmers through agroforestry, adding income and green cover |
| Greener cities | Create urban forests, alongside schemes like the Nagar Van Yojana |
| Citizen participation (LiFE) | Involve employees, families and customers in planting and care |
Keep claims accurate
- Say you support or align with national goals; do not claim your trees as part of government totals unless a programme formally counts them.
- Report what survives, with locations and photographs, rather than saplings planted.
- Keep plantation separate from your own emission figures; see Green credits vs carbon credits vs CSR vs BRSR.
Plan an aligned programme
We plan plantation programmes around landscape, species and survival, and report every tree with geo-tags. See how we support government priorities or plan a programme with our team.
