Project Planning & Execution

No. of trees: 30 Trees

Plantation Location: Kanha Shanti vanam SRCM Heartfulness Meditation Centre, Kanha Village, Nandigama, Telangana 509328

Plantation Date: 21st February 2026.

Name of Species: Mahogany, Neem, Jamun.

Species Selection & Its Benefits:

The species selected for the plantation initiative—Mahogany, Neem, and Jamun—were carefully chosen to align with the local ecosystem and maximise ecological benefits. These species offer a strong combination of environmental, socio-economic, and long-term sustainability advantages. Jamun is a fruit-bearing species that provides nutritional and economic value while attracting birds and pollinators, thereby supporting biodiversity. Its dense canopy also offers excellent shade and contributes to urban cooling.
Mahogany is a valuable timber species known for its high carbon sequestration potential and long lifespan. It provides long-term environmental stability, enhances green cover, and strengthens ecosystem resilience.
Neem is widely recognised for its medicinal properties, air-purifying ability, and natural pest-resistant qualities. It plays a significant role in improving air quality, supporting soil health, and promoting ecological balance and community well-being. Together, these species contribute to improved air quality, soil conservation, water retention, and climate resilience, while also offering shade, food value, medicinal benefits, and long-term environmental sustainability.

Planting Methodology and Its Advantages

Urban Forestry: An urban forest is a network of trees, shrubs, and vegetation strategically planted in developed or semi-urban areas to enhance biodiversity, improve air quality, reduce the urban heat island effect, and create meaningful green spaces. As part of TEDxSIU Lavale’s initiative, this approach transforms ideas shared on stage into tangible environmental action. Urban forests support climate resilience, promote mental well-being, and contribute to building sustainable communities through thoughtful green infrastructure.

Advantages of Urban Forestry

  • Climate Regulation and Cooling Effect: Urban forests help mitigate the urban heat island effect by providing shade and cooling through transpiration, lowering temperatures in cities, reducing the need for air conditioning, and conserving energy. This aligns with TEDxSIU Lavale’s commitment to transforming powerful ideas into meaningful climate action.

  • Improved Air Quality: Trees absorb pollutants like carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, leading to improved air quality and reducing the risk of respiratory illnesses in urban areas.Through this initiative, TEDxSIU Lavale extends its sustainability dialogue beyond the stage into real-world environmental impact.

  • Stormwater Management and Flood Prevention: Urban forests improve the soil’s ability to absorb and retain water, reducing stormwater runoff, preventing flooding, and promoting groundwater recharge, thus helping manage water resources efficiently. This supports the broader sustainability vision championed by TEDxSIU Lavale through action-oriented environmental initiatives.

  • Soil Erosion Control: The deep root systems of trees prevent soil erosion, especially in areas with heavy rainfall or steep slopes, stabilizing the land and reducing soil loss in urban environments.Such ecological stability reflects the initiative’s focus on long-term environmental resilience.

  • Aesthetic and Recreational Value: The transformation of unused spaces into green zones adds aesthetic value to the area and provides visitors and local communities with recreational spaces, creating a welcoming and inspiring green environment for participants and the community.

  • Enhanced Community Engagement and Well-being: Urban forests provide accessible green spaces where communities can engage in recreational activities, improving mental health, reducing stress, and fostering a sense of environmental stewardship among participants and local residents. This mirrors the collaborative and community-driven spirit of TEDxSIU Lavale.

  • Increased Property Value: Urban forests enhance the overall appeal of surrounding areas, which can positively influence land value and livability over time.

  • Noise Reduction: Urban forests act as natural sound barriers, reducing noise pollution and creating quieter, more peaceful surroundings. This contributes to creating a calm and reflective environment aligned with the thoughtful ethos of TEDx initiatives.
