Miyawaki forests
Dense native forests in cities
Oil, gas and petrochemicals
Native green belts, mangroves and compensatory plantations for refineries, terminals and pipelines, geo-tagged and cared for.
400+ companies plant with us · 85% survival, program-wide · 14 states across India
Quick answer
Refineries and petrochemical units need green belts set by their environmental clearance, mangrove protection or replanting at coastal sites, and compensatory afforestation when pipelines use forest land. Their CCTS emission intensity targets, notified in January 2026, are met by cutting plant emissions or buying Carbon Credit Certificates, not by planting trees. Plantation supports green belt, coastal, forest-law, CSR and BRSR duties.

Refineries, petrochemical complexes, terminals and pipelines face several rules that involve land and trees. Only some of them can be met by planting.
| Rule | What it asks | How plantation helps | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| CCTS emission intensity targets (refining, petrochemicals) | Cut GHG emissions per unit of product in 2025-26 and 2026-27 against 2023-24; shortfalls settled with Carbon Credit Certificates | No: trees do not lower a unit's emission intensity or count toward its target | ICAP |
| Green belt in environmental clearance | Green belt share set in EC; 2025 OM refers new standalone Red units in air-polluting sectors to 25%, 40% in polluted areas | Yes: tiered native belts with five-year care and half-yearly records | MoEFCC OM, 29 Oct 2025 |
| CRZ Notification, 2019 (mangroves) | Protect mangroves as Ecologically Sensitive Areas; replant 3:1 if development affects them | Yes: mangrove restoration and its upkeep | PIB backgrounder |
| Compensatory afforestation for pipelines | Land and funds for CA when forest land is diverted; start within two years; 0.4 canopy by year five | Yes: raising and caring for CA plantations with the Forest Department | Van Rules, 2023 |
| Environmental claims (CCPA guidelines, 2024) | No "green" or "carbon neutral" claims without adequate qualifiers and verifiable evidence | Supplement only: verifiable plantation data supports careful claims, never as a substitute for cuts | Mongabay India |
Final emission intensity targets for petroleum refining and petrochemicals were notified in January 2026. They are met inside the plant, through efficiency, fuel and process changes, or by buying Carbon Credit Certificates.
Trees do not change a refinery's intensity number. Read why plantation does not count toward CCTS targets.
MoEFCC's 29 October 2025 office memorandum moved away from a flat 33% green belt. CPCB lists refineries and petrochemicals as Red category, and EC conditions set the final figure. See green belt at refineries.
Terminals and ports work next to protected mangroves, and pipelines through forest trigger compensatory afforestation. See our guides on mangrove restoration and compensatory afforestation for pipelines.
Every project starts with a site survey of soil, water, wind and safety zones. We then plan species and layout, plant, irrigate and fill gaps through the care period.
Trees are geo-tagged and reported on GreenTrack, so EC reports, CSR reviews and BRSR disclosures use the same data.

It depends on your environmental clearance. Older clearances often set 33% of the area; for new and pending applications, a ministry memorandum of 29 October 2025 sets minimums from 10% to 40% by category. Work out your area and trees with our green belt calculator.
No. CCTS targets measure emissions per unit of product. Trees do not lower that number. See our CCTS guide.
Its EC conditions decide. The 29 October 2025 MoEFCC OM refers new standalone Red units in predominantly air-polluting sectors to 25%, and 40% in critically or severely polluted areas.
Yes. The CRZ Notification, 2019 treats mangroves as Ecologically Sensitive Areas and mandates 3:1 replanting if development affects them.
Yes. Pipelines are linear projects under the Van Rules, 2023. CA must start within two years of the diversion order.
No. We do not sell CCTS carbon credits from our plantations. Carbon figures we share are estimates.
Green belt, mangrove and compensatory plantation work is priced per project after a site survey. Plan a programme to start.
Yes, as a supplement to cutting your own emissions, with estimates labelled. See what holds up.
