Quick answer
Retailers and D2C brands mostly use plantation for customer campaigns, CSR under Schedule VII and BRSR Principle 6 data. Any 'green' claim to customers must be specific, substantiated and disclosed, as the CCPA greenwashing guidelines of 2024 require. Plantation does not count toward plastic packaging EPR, which covers marketplaces and retail chains.

Retailers and D2C brands plant trees mostly for customers, CSR and BRSR. The cards below show where plantation helps, and where a rule needs a different fix.
| Driver | What it asks | How plantation helps | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green claims (CCPA Greenwashing Guidelines, 2024) | Terms like 'green', 'eco-friendly' and 'carbon-neutral' need qualifiers and substantiation. Details must be disclosed in the ad or through a QR code or URL. Future claims need clear, actionable plans. | Partly: a tree per order is a fair claim when it is specific and disclosed. It does not make a product 'green' or 'carbon-neutral'. | CCPA Greenwashing Guidelines, 2024 |
| CSR spending (Companies Act 2013, s.135) | Companies with ₹500 crore net worth, ₹1,000 crore turnover or ₹5 crore net profit spend at least 2% of average net profit of three years. | Yes: plantation and agroforestry fall under Schedule VII's environmental sustainability item. | Companies Act s.135 and Schedule VII (Govt of Uttarakhand CSR portal) |
| BRSR Core and value chain (SEBI, 2025) | Assessment or assurance of BRSR Core reaches the top 1,000 listed companies in FY 2026-27. Value chain disclosures are voluntary for the top 250 from FY 2025-26. A new indicator asks how many green credits were generated or procured. | Partly: plantation data feeds BRSR Principle 6. Trees do not lower the store or warehouse emissions you report. | SEBI circular on BRSR Core, value chain and green credits, 28 Mar 2025 |
| EPR for plastic packaging (Plastic Waste Management Rules, amended 2022) | Brand owners, including online marketplaces and retail chains (micro and small units excluded), register on the CPCB portal and meet EPR targets for plastic packaging. | No: EPR is met through recycling and processing of packaging waste. EPR credits come only from registered processors, not trees. | CPCB FAQs on EPR registration for plastic packaging |
| Green Credit Programme (MoEFCC, Green Credit Rules 2023) | Green credits for restoring degraded forest land are claimed only after five years of work and 40% canopy density. | Partly: credits need degraded forest land and five years of care. Retail tree-per-order trees are reported as trees planted, not credits. | PIB: Green Credit Programme, 16 Mar 2026 |
Through Carbon Neutral Brands, every order, purchase or gift card can plant a tree. That is a 2-3 ft sapling, planted, cared for three years and geo-tagged. Customers can follow their tree online, which gives you the disclosure the CCPA guidelines expect.
Say 'we plant one tree for every order', not 'carbon-neutral delivery'. Name where the trees are planted and how long they are cared for. Keep vague words like 'eco-friendly' off the banner unless you can back them. Our survival methodology explains how we count trees that are alive.
Large chains can use CSR budgets for urban forests in the cities where they run stores, and agroforestry in rural districts. Store and warehouse teams can join plantation drives. Jewellery and lifestyle brands often gift trees to clients on festivals and anniversaries.
We advise against it. The CCPA guidelines need substantiation for 'carbon-neutral'. Say 'one tree planted per order' and link to the tree data.
Pricing depends on the number of trees, the location and the programme. Each tree is a 2-3 ft sapling, planted, cared for three years and geo-tagged. See Carbon Neutral Brands.
Yes. Each tree is geo-tagged, and customers can view it online through a link or QR code you share.
No. EPR targets are met through recycling and processing of plastic packaging. Report plantation under CSR and BRSR instead.
It depends on the design. Customer campaigns are usually marketing spend. Your CSR committee decides what qualifies under Schedule VII, and the project must not benefit only employees.
No. We do not sell carbon credits from these plantations. Any carbon figure we share is an estimate.
Yes. We run plantation drives for store, warehouse and office teams, and care for the trees afterwards.
