Quick answer
Most Indian cities require permission to fell trees, with replacement planting as a condition. Delhi asks for 10 saplings per tree felled, maintained for 5-7 years. Maharashtra protects urban trees aged 50 years or more as heritage trees. Green ratings such as GRIHA reward preserving trees and replanting native species at 1:3.

| Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975 (amended 2021) | Trees aged 50+ are heritage trees; proposals above 200 trees go to the State Tree Authority | Yes: compensatory planting as directed; design to retain heritage trees | The Tribune |
