Quick answer

What does a foundation, NGO or school need from tree plantation?

Since 1 April 2021, companies can run CSR through implementing agencies only if they are registered on Form CSR-1. Companies with a CSR obligation of ₹10 crore or more must get independent impact assessment of projects of ₹1 crore or more, so funders ask partners for verifiable field data. Schools and colleges can link campus forests to Mission LiFE eco-clubs and the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign.

Foundations, NGOs and education: what drives plantation

Corporate foundations, NGOs, implementing agencies, schools and universities plant for CSR funders, students and communities. What funders now need is registered delivery, multi-year care and evidence. The cards below set out each driver.

Driver What it asks How plantation helps Source
Implementing agency registration (CSR Rules, 2021, Form CSR-1) From 1 April 2021, companies can run CSR through implementing agencies only if they are registered with the Central Government on Form CSR-1. Yes: foundations can place plantation inside a registered CSR project, with a specialist partner for planting and care. LiveLaw: CSR Amendment Rules, 2021
Impact assessment (CSR Rules, 2021) Companies with a CSR obligation of ₹10 crore or more get independent impact assessment of projects of ₹1 crore or more. Yes: geo-tags, survival counts and farmer records give assessors evidence they can verify in the field. LiveLaw: CSR Amendment Rules, 2021
Ongoing projects and overheads (CSR Rules, 2021) Multi-year ongoing projects can run up to three years after the start year. Administrative overheads are capped at 5% of CSR spend. Yes: a plantation with three years of care fits the ongoing-project structure and keeps overheads visible. LiveLaw: CSR Amendment Rules, 2021
BRSR reporting by CSR funders (SEBI, 2021) The top 1,000 listed companies file a BRSR from FY 2022-23, so their CSR partners are asked for verifiable data. Partly: plantation data supports environment and community disclosures. It does not reduce the funder's own emissions. SEBI circular on BRSR, 10 May 2021
Mission LiFE and school eco-clubs (MoEFCC, 2022) Mission LiFE promotes mindful use of resources; eco-clubs in schools have been asked to spread the plant-for-mother message. Yes: campus forests and student planting days give eco-clubs a hands-on, long-term project. MoEFCC: Mission LiFE cell
Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam (MoEFCC, 2024) A national campaign to plant a tree in one's mother's name; the 80 crore seedling target was met in September 2024. Yes: schools, colleges and NGOs can run family planting days and track the trees afterwards. PIB: Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, 80 crore seedlings planted

For foundations and implementing agencies

Many foundations run education or health programmes and add plantation for environment goals. We can work as the plantation partner inside your CSR project, with farmer agreements and three years of care. See CSR tree plantation and agroforestry.

Give funders the data they will be asked for

Funders filing a BRSR, or commissioning an impact assessment, need tree counts, locations and survival. GreenTrack gives each funder a view of its own trees. See GreenTrack.

For schools, colleges and universities

A small Miyawaki forest on campus gives eco-clubs a living lab. Students can plant, record growth and learn native species. Off-campus planting days with families also work well.

Questions foundations, NGOs and schools ask

Does an implementing agency need CSR-1 registration?

Yes. Since 1 April 2021, companies can undertake CSR through implementing agencies only if they are registered with the Central Government on Form CSR-1.

Can a foundation subcontract planting to you?

Yes. Many foundations keep the funder relationship and use us for planting, care and monitoring. We agree roles, sites and reporting in writing before work starts.

What data will a CSR funder ask for?

Usually tree counts, species, GPS locations, photos, survival checks and beneficiary details. GreenTrack holds all of these for each project. See BRSR-ready reporting.

Does tree plantation count under Schedule VII?

Yes. Schedule VII includes environmental sustainability, ecological balance, protection of flora and fauna and agroforestry. See our Schedule VII checklist.

Can a school build a small forest on campus?

Yes, if there is open land with water access. A Miyawaki forest needs little space and gives eco-clubs a long-term project. Campus projects are priced per project after a site survey.

Can students plant trees for Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam with you?

Yes. Students can plant with their families on a planting day, and the trees are geo-tagged and cared for afterwards. See how schools take part.

Do farmers in your projects earn from the trees?

Farmers keep the fruit and timber income. Agroforestry can give up to 3x farm income compared with conventional two-crop farming.
