IICSR–GCCI Goa Climate Action & Tree Plantation Initiative

The IICSR–GCCI Goa CSO Roundtable, organized by IICSR Group in association with the Goa Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI), brings together sustainability leaders, industry experts, and changemakers to discuss meaningful approaches to environmental responsibility and sustainable development. The platform encourages collaboration and knowledge sharing to address pressing climate and sustainability challenges.

As part of this commitment, the initiative focuses on tree plantation and climate-positive environmental action as practical pathways towards carbon neutrality. Tree plantation contributes to increasing green cover, enhancing biodiversity, supporting carbon sequestration, and strengthening ecological resilience while encouraging responsible environmental practices.

Through collective participation and collaborative climate action, the initiative aims to create lasting environmental value and inspire organizations and communities to contribute towards a greener future. The IICSR–GCCI partnership demonstrates how industry collaboration and sustainability-focused action can support the broader goal of carbon neutrality and long-term environmental stewardship.

Project Planning & Execution

No of Trees: 100 Trees

Plantation Location: Shirur, Maharashtra Pin-412210

Plantation Date: 11th September 2026

Species Name: Pomegranate

Species Selection & Benefits:

Pomegranate (Punica granatum) was selected for the agroforestry project as a commercially valuable fruit-bearing species that can support both environmental sustainability and farmer livelihoods. Its relatively compact growth habit makes it suitable for integration into appropriately planned agroforestry systems, while its fruits provide nutritional value and potential income diversification for farmers. Pomegranate also contributes to green cover, landscape diversity, soil protection, and pollinator support through its flowering. When combined with suitable native, fruit-bearing, and multipurpose species, it can help create a productive, diverse, and resilient agroforestry landscape.

This initiative has empowered the farmer, Mr. Tushar Ashok Nichit, to adopt agroforestry, allowing him to benefit from improved soil fertility, enhanced water retention, reduced erosion, and a diversified source of income. By integrating trees with agriculture, he has secured an additional livelihood opportunity through fruit trees, ensuring long-term financial stability. This effort not only contributes to environmental sustainability but also strengthens economic resilience, fostering a resilient farming model and contributing to the long-term well-being of the Shirur region.

Planting Methodology and Its Advantages

Agroforestry: IICSR Groups’ tree plantation initiative promotes agroforestry as a sustainable approach that combines environmental conservation with community development. By integrating trees with agricultural landscapes, the initiative supports biodiversity, improves soil and water health, enhances carbon sequestration, and strengthens climate resilience while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for farmers. Through this effort, IICSR Groups reaffirms its commitment to ecological restoration, environmental stewardship, and building greener, healthier, and more resilient communities.

Advantages of Agroforestry

  • Increased Farmer Incomes: This approach helps in increasing the farmer’s income by as much as 3 times. Farmers benefit from diversified income sources, lifting economic resilience.

  • Improved Livelihoods: Agroforestry enhances farmers' resilience to economic and climate-related shocks by creating more sustainable and diversified farming systems.

  • Biodiversity Promotion: Agroforestry supports a diverse range of plants and animals, creating habitats for wildlife and improving ecosystem health.

  • Environmental Sustainability: This model reduces carbon emissions and promotes sustainable land management, aligning with SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

  • Food Security: Agroforestry enhances agricultural productivity and food availability by integrating fruit-bearing trees with crops, contributing to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger).

  • Carbon Sequestration: Trees planted through agroforestry absorb carbon dioxide, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Climate Resilience: Agroforestry helps mitigate climate change impacts by improving land productivity and fostering biodiversity.

  • Improved Soil and Water Management: Trees enhance soil fertility, reduce erosion, and increase water retention, resulting in more resilient farming.

Activities During Tree Plantation

The tree plantation activity at Shirur, Maharashtra, reflected IICSR’s commitment to environmental sustainability and meaningful community participation. With the plantation site prepared and pits pre-dug in advance, the activity was organised smoothly, allowing farmers to actively participate in the plantation process.

The farmers took part in planting the pomegranate saplings and watering the newly planted trees, helping ensure that the saplings received proper care from the very beginning. Their involvement also strengthened their connection with the agroforestry initiative and highlighted the importance of regular care and maintenance for healthy tree growth.

Overall, the plantation drive created a strong sense of environmental responsibility, community participation, and collective action. The activity not only contributed to increasing green cover and supporting agroforestry but also provided a meaningful opportunity for farmers and IICSR to work together towards a greener and more sustainable future.
